Comparison Notes
Winner: Tochi-Otome In season, in 2022 and 2023 these are available in Mediya for 600 JPY
If you like the sweetest strawberry, the Tochi Aika is usually available for the same price
Amaou
- Fukuoka, Kyushu
- one of the most famous, people love it and think it’s the sweetest and tasiest and most expensive, but in two separate years, the tochigi ones seem to taste better
- it’s pretty good, a little on the sweeter side, very red all the way through, slightly rounder Tochi-Otome
- Tochigi
- Another classic brand, this one is less red, has a crisper texture and a sharper berry taste, but has a very fresh berry taste.
- This one is our favorite Tochi-Aika
- Tochigi
- This is a newer brand, it is really red, bigger than the tochi-otome and it’s the sweetest variety from the competition. Very tasty, but the Tochi-Otome has a more strawberry taste Benihope
- Shizuoka
- This one actually tastes incredibly similar to the Tochi-Otome, has a slightly softer texture. If you mixed it with the Tochi-Otome you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference Awayuki
- Saga, Kyushu
- These are white strawberries and the taste is good, a pretty well balanced taste, a little sweeter than the Tochi-Otome/Benihope. It’s actually quite up there in taste, but the texture was a bit soft and mushy vs the others
In late season (March/April) the Tochi-Otomes get a little less sweet. Tochi-Aika seems to be better. Also, there’s a Gunma type called Yayoihime that apparently is quite good later in the season:
