Lists of Clients and Tools:

My review of basically every OpenAI API CLI tool I could find (2023-09-01):

https://fediverse.randomfoo.net/notice/AZJr270a7Eyxh9NwK8 Spent a couple hours poking around at ChatGPT/OpenAI API CLI clients. There are a bajillion half-baked ones (I’ve made some myself so no judgement), but here were my top picks for full-featured apps:

  • aichat - this Rust app is probably the best single option. It a richly featured REPL, enough config options and all the basics (markdown, language highlighting, history, etc) and is somewhat maintained

  • kharvd/gpt-cli - a smaller Python project, it also has a flexible YAML configuration that lets you load roles, and has a few niceties like token/usage tracking, support for Anthropic/Google (uses rich/prompt-toolkit)

  • j178/chatgpt - a very active Go project that has a lot of Emacs-y keybindings and JSON config options. While the presentation is somewhat weaker (eg, no syntax highlighting), it has it’s own scrollback TUI, realtime-token counting, and some neat stuff like copying the last message directly to the clipboard

  • kojix2/chatgpt-cli - the executable and config folder is sadly the same as j178/chatgpt, written in Crystal, but has quite a few features, including a %debug mode that’s really nice (shows the raw API calls), prompt loading from awesome-chatgpt-prompts, and HTML output. Currently being very actively developed. Missing some basic features like streaming, and syntax-highlighted/colored output though.

While not as complete, some interesting clients worth mentioning:

  • efJerryYang/chatgpt-cli - not updated in a while (a lot of the TODOs listed would be nice), but has one of the nicest TUIs (rich-based) and Markdown implementation (renders tables while streaming!) - however, I didn’t find a way to effectively copy them, still neat.

  • hey - while not active, I like how the “command mode” works.

  • There are a couple toy JS clients like pathikrit/chatgpt-cli and narinluangrath/chatgpt-tui that have some interesting features like loading content from web pages/document chatting.

  • If you’re looking for more tools, there’s Simon Willison’s llm and chatblade which do a bit of everything and are probably worth having installed.

  • For specialist clients, be sure to take a look at aider and mentat which are CLI clients built as code assistants.
